What Not to Wear (or Bring) on Your Wedding Morning
Some of the most common wedding-morning regrets cost nothing to avoid. They are tiny, they are easy, and almost nobody thinks to mention them until it is too late and they are sitting in a photo you will look at for the rest of your life.
This is our list of the small things to leave off, leave at home, or sort the day before. None of it is dramatic. All of it is the kind of detail that quietly separates a relaxed, polished getting-ready set from one with an avoidable flaw in the corner of every frame.
Marks on the skin that linger for hours.
- No bra straps before the ceremony. Tight straps leave indentations across the shoulders and back that can take hours to fade, and they show in a strapless or off-shoulder gown. Go strapless, adhesive, or braless well before you dress.
- No tight socks. Socks with elastic leave deep rings around the ankle and calf. In open-toe shoes that is visible, and worse, the rubbing scuffs a fresh spray tan and leaves pale lines exactly where you do not want them.
- Mind the spray tan and friction. Anything tight or rough, sock elastic, a snug waistband, a watch strap, can rub colour off a tan before the ceremony. Loose, soft layers only on the morning.
The hair-tie problem everyone forgets.
This one is so common it deserves its own line. A hair tie left on your wrist, or on a bridesmaid's, is invisible to you all morning and glaringly obvious in every close-up photo of hands, rings and bouquets. It is one of the most frequent edits photographers are quietly asked to make later. Take them off, every wrist, before the details and the dressing begin.
What you wear to get ready.
- No robes or hoodies that rub your hair. A fluffy robe collar or a hood pulled up over a finished style crushes and frizzes the very thing you sat still for. If you want robe photos, wear it before the hair is set, then change into something smooth.
- Button or zip, never pull-over. The top you change out of, once hair and makeup are done, must open down the front. A pullover top dragged over a finished face and style is the fastest way to undo an hour of work.
- Soft and front-opening for the whole party. The same applies to your bridesmaids if they are being styled. Matching button-through shirts photograph beautifully and protect everyone's look.
Why these tiny things matter so much.
Individually, none of these is a catastrophe. Together, they are the difference between a getting-ready gallery that looks effortless and one with a small, fixable flaw in shot after shot. And because they cost nothing and take no time, avoiding them is the easiest win of the entire wedding-planning process.
