The Getting-Ready Room: How Much Space You Really Need on the Morning
The room you get ready in shapes the entire morning. It is where the first photos are taken, where your bridal party gathers, and where you spend the calm hours before the ceremony. Get the space right and the morning flows. Get it wrong and even a well-planned timeline starts to feel cramped and frantic.
Here is how we help our brides set up a getting-ready room that stays serene, bright and photo-ready from the first coffee to the last lash.
Book more room than you think you need.
This is the one almost everyone underestimates. Picture what is actually in the room on the morning: you, your bridal party, sometimes a parent or two, a photographer moving around for angles, one to three stylists with their kits and chairs, plus every dress, bag, shoe box and detail tray that comes with all of those people. A suite that looked generous on the booking page can feel very small very quickly.
You want space for a styling station near the best natural light, room for people to move without bumping the chair, and somewhere to lay garments flat. When in doubt, size up. The extra room is never wasted, and it shows in the relaxed feel of your photos.
Chase the light, not the decor.
The single most flattering thing a getting-ready room can have is large windows with soft, indirect natural light. That light is what makes both your makeup and your photos look their best. Set the styling chair near a window, keep the heavy curtains open, and avoid getting ready in a dim room lit only by warm yellow lamps, which fights against everything we and your photographer are trying to achieve.
A second room for a big party.
If you have a large bridal party, consider booking a second, smaller room nearby as a break-and-bathroom space. It gives everyone somewhere to change, take a call, eat, and use the bathroom, while your main suite stays calm, clean and camera-ready. It keeps the noise and the clutter in one place and the serenity in the other.
And yes, there is a delicate upside to a separate bathroom room. A suite full of people over a long morning is a suite that benefits from a designated facilities room down the hall. What happens in the break room stays in the break room, and your beautiful, fragrant, perfume-scented bridal suite stays exactly that. Your photographer, and your candles, will thank you.
Appoint a go-to person so you are not interrupted.
While you are in the chair, questions will come. Where are the buttonholes being delivered. Has the car confirmed. Can someone let the videographer in. If every one of those reaches you, your glam time stops being relaxing and starts being a command centre.
Nominate one calm, organised person, often a bridesmaid, a sibling or a coordinator, to be the go-to for the morning. They field the questions, run the small errands and keep the timeline moving, so your time being pampered stays genuinely yours. It is the closest thing to a stress-free morning we know.
The room is one part of a calm, photo-ready wedding morning. For the full picture, including detail shots, dress care and what not to wear, read our complete guide to preparing for your wedding morning. When you are ready to plan the beauty side of it, you can tell us about your day.
On the day of my wedding I had the Pro Team, Alana and Jill. They were more than accommodating when I requested if we could start a bit earlier on the day. They went above and beyond. Couldn't be happier.
